Law of Attraction and Affirmations

When you think of affirmations, you might think of that character Stuart Smalley from Saturday Night Live, talking into the mirror: ‘’I am good enough, I am smart enough and gosh darnit, people like me.’’ I am a huge fan of affirmations but many may find resistance to them because you may feel silly doing them. We tend to mock personal development tools like that.

If you are interested in using law of attraction for your benefit and changing negative thought patterns, I find them to be a highly effective tool. If you want to attract better circumstances into your life, you need to believe you can, you need to dispel the limiting beliefs that have blocked these things thus far. Cultivating this level of belief and really making headway on rooting out the detrimental stuff can be challenging. After all, you have been carrying around this stuff for a really long time.

We really only effect significant change in our lives when we repeatedly expose ourselves to the information that implants more empowering ideas and the repetition of actions that help the information take root. Affirmations are a great way to go about making this change.

Many find affirmations do not work for them and I suspect it is because they are not using them in the most effective manner. When you really work on changing your belief system and patterns of thinking, you are going to experience a lot of conflict with your conscious mind and ego, who will be screaming at you that this stuff is impossible and for you to look at your outside circumstances. You also have a lot of stuff going on in your subconscious mind, which essentially rules your life and for most of us, what is residing down there causes us a lot of problems. So, with all of this on your plate, you need to approach the affirmations in a certain manner for them to actually work for you.

Anything is possible for us, regardless of what is happening now or has happened in the past and there is no reason to settle for anything less than exactly what you want. You have read about law of attraction and the power of our thoughts, feelings, expectations and intentions and it resonates. You believe this stuff to be true. Great. But, for many of us, this knowing does not fully permeate for awhile. Our old ways of thinking are still strong, our ego is holding on for dear life, we are still judging according to outside appearances. This all has the potential to create great conflict.

For affirmations to work best, you need to reduce this conflict as much as possible or your effort will be for naught. For example, if you are on the brink of financial ruin and cannot even pay your bills, chanting over and over again that you are a millionaire will probably not do much good because even though it is totally possible for you to become a millionaire, it is highly unlikely your mind is accepting this as a potential reality at this moment. Your energy is nowhere near what it needs to be for this type of financial success. And that is okay. If you are currently only making 3,000 dollars a month, telling yourself you can make 50 is likely not going to resonate with you. But, if you can truly feel these grander aspirations, then by all means, go for it. The attracting process is more than just what you are thinking ,it is what your predominant feeling is. You must be able to feel what you are saying is true.

I use money as an example here because I find this is one of the most common things people try to attract into their lives and the thing we probably struggle most with. One of the biggest reasons is probably because we have a lot of weird energy around money and our outside circumstances have a strong pull on that we cannot quite ignore as well as we should. We have been in our current financial situation so long, our rational, logical minds have a very hard time seeing how it could change.

To avoid these conflicts, try affirmations that are more believable to you from your current standpoint. This is not to say you should be ‘’realistic’’ or settle for less, but the sooner you start vibing with thoughts that actually feel good to you from where you are right now, the sooner you will manifest things. This will give you the confidence to aim for the bigger stuff. For example, instead of getting super specific, try more general statements that do not create as much of a conflict. Using money again as an example, you might try something like ‘’My finances are improving every day.’’ or ‘’The Universe brings me opportunities to make more money.’’

When it comes to affirmations, I find all different manners work -- written, spoken and just saying them in my head. I like to say them to myself when I am going to sleep at night or when I find my mind going down a path I know is counterproductive to what I want. It helps bring me back on track. Attracting better circumstances into your life requires a better way of thinking, no two ways about it. Affirmations are one of the many tools available to facilitate this and using them in the proper way can do wonders.
