What's Your Excuse?

If you are not doing something you want to do, why? What are the reasons? What is holding you back? For most of us, they are not legitimate blockades that truly prevent us from doing said thing. In most instances, the issues holding us back are completely in our control and we are making a choice not to make the change. We usually do not see it this way, however. We see it as being out of our control and we resign ourselves to the fact that we cannot get what we want and that we must continue living our unhappy existence...this existence is familiar however and I think that is a big part of it. Getting the desired result often requires major changes, sacrifice and doing a host of other things that cause a whole lot of discomfort;and let's face it, we do not want to be bothered. It is easier to make the excuses.

No matter what is going on in our lives right now, we usually have the ability to take at least one small step towards fulfilling a particular desire. If we are not making the choice to take that step, then the only place we can lay blame for not having the things we want is with ourselves. Sure, some things certainly eat away at our time and energy, such as children, our current job and other responsibilities, but there is always a way to transition from the life we no longer desire to the want we truly do. It may not be easy at times, but it is always possible. We may not like some of the choices we need to make to get there, but if they get us closer to our goal, they are choices worth making.

I really want you to think about the questions I asked in the beginning of the post. Are the things you want really, truly impossible to get or does it just seem too hard, given the current circumstances? Do you have a desire to go back to school, but say you cannot because you have kids? I knew a woman working on her doctorate while raising three young children under five. Was it hard? No doubt, but when you really want something, you find the time and put up with all the unpleasant stuff that may pop up along the way. Really get detailed with the perceived reasons you have for not pursuing a certain goal and honestly assess whether these barriers truly make it impossible or if they are merely excuses.

  1. Hi KC,

    Excellent post ;)

Good note about being detailed with your perceived excuses. Go through each 1, step by step. An orderly, detailed approach kills excuses dead in their tracks. You easily blast away at the foundation of these limiting beliefs, if you confront and dissect them.

    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thanks for the comment RB. Taking that time to really examine is key, because it is this examination that will help you realize the amount of control you actually have. This mental work is the key first step in making the necessary changes.
